This module aims to not only act as a panoramic view of fashion history, but to position Western European fashion within a wider context of culture and society throughout the different fashion eras. It first introduces the main theories that have informed our understanding of what fashion stands for and have helped us determine what the functions of fashion are. Then, through an analysis of the key historic periods, students are led to reflect on the notions of style, silhouette and colors, and on the economic, political, technical and cultural contexts that have shaped Western fashion. This course also intends to give students an insight into the historical influences that inform today’s designers creations and work. Via an appreciation of clothing, paintings, images and movies, this module aims to inform and inspire the student to research further into the rich history and material culture of clothing as a route to their understanding of styles and fashion practices, and as a way to feed their own creative process.
